With the upcoming summer months in mind, the Elburn & Countryside Fire Protection District has the following safety tips for our citizens: * People with chronic health conditions and senior citizens should take care when temperatures reach 90 degrees and above. * Check on elderly relatives, friends and neighbors on a daily basis. * Drink plenty of fluids, unless your fluid intake is limited by certain medications. * Avoid alcohol and limit your intake of caffeine. * Eat lighter meals. * Rest longer and more frequently. * Cut back on outdoor activities, even walking. Try to do outdoor activities, like yard work, during early morning or evening hours when it is cooler outside. * Use cool compresses or towels soaked in cold water on your neck and wrists to cool down. Cool baths and showers will also help cool the body down.
For locations of cooling centers, call the Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging at *815) 939-0727 or the Senior Helpline at (800) 252-8966. |
